Calvert County Public Schools recently hosted the 2nd Annual Bullying Prevention Summit at the College of Southern Maryland’s Prince Frederick campus. About five students in grades 4-11 from every school in the district were invited to attend.

The event—supported by the College of Southern Maryland, Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, and Royalle Dining Service—featured presentations from the schools system and community organizations. Community speakers included: Sgt. Gary Mounts, MSP Computer Crime Unit; Kathryn Marsh, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney; Guffrie M. Smith, Jr., Maryland State Board of Education and retired Calvert County Public Schools educator; and Sgt. Michael Bomgardner, D.A.R.E. Coordinator with Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. A wide range of Calvert County Public Schools

employees presented, including safety advocates, pupil personnel workers, school psychologists, and central office staff. Students played an active role in the day, as well. A student-led group from the Northeast Community Center opened the day with a skit called “The Change Club,” and the MAC Scholars from Calvert High School presented about ways to change the climate of a school.

Kim Roof, Director of Student Services, said the event centered on what students can do to be proactive against bullying. In the afternoon, school teams, under the direction of Larry Titus, Community Resource & School Safety Specialist, developed action plans to encourage their peers to stand up for each other and make a difference.
