Shine the Light Ms. Mignardi

$

The job of the 21st century school librarian is multi-faceted. Among other roles, today’s librarian is a research assistant, teacher, staff developer, technology resource, and curator. Calvert High library media specialist Donna Mignardi wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ms. Mignardi is an academic at heart. She thrives on teaching students to conduct research for history and English classes and especially enjoys collaborating with classroom teachers to plan and teach lessons. She teaches students to seek out reliable sources and to cite them accurately. Need to know the best database to use or the proper MLA format? Check with Ms. Mignardi.

But the Calvert High library isn’t just for traditional research. An avid reader herself, Ms. Mignardi wants her students to enjoy a good book. A bookshelf at the library entrance is decorated as a “Read Box”—a play on the popular Red Boxes where one can rent videos—and displays engaging books to draw students into the library. Young adult fiction shares the shelves with literary classics. New titles scroll across a flat screen TV. There’s a special section devoted to the nominees for the annual Black Eyed Susan Book Awards, and Calvert High students vote for their favorites every year. She sets aside titles for her frequent flyers who stop in weekly to check out a stack of books.

Recently Ms. Mignardi has taken advantage of the opportunities afforded by the one-hour lunch period at Calvert High. Students eat during either the first or second half of the period and spend the other half of the period meeting with teachers, participating in clubs and activities, or doing homework. A core group of students gravitates to the library. Ms. Mignardi wanted to engage the students with interesting activities, so she turned to makerspaces, which are places where people gather to design and create. Makerspaces are popping up in libraries across the school district, and Ms. Mignardi has embraced the trend. Her library includes centers for electrical snap circuits, origami, computer animation, and even makey makeys (devices that can allow virtually any object to interact with a computer) for the more technically inclined students. The activities incorporate engineering, artistic, and critical thinking skills as students create and solve problems. It’s a chance for students to engage in self-directed learning while they are having fun with their friends.

One of Ms. Mignardi favorite parts of her job is collaborating with her colleagues. She plans to work with staff to expand Calvert High’s participation in the “Maryland Hour of Code,” a contest sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education to spark student interest in computer science and computational thinking. Last year, she collaborated with one teacher to introduce basic coding to his students. This year, she has plans for 100% participation among staff and students. She wants to give them a taste of future career and educational possibilities, whether they are using a computer to write code or colored beads to learn coding patterns. Ms. Mignardi has the tenacity to reach her goal of 100% involvement.

Ms. Mignardi’s respect for her students as individuals is evident. In addition to the traditional academic materials, computers, and makerspaces, she has puzzles and games because she recognizes that sometimes students just need a break. In the corner of the library is a charging station where students can plug in their personal devices; she understands the reality of being a teenager in a digital world. Her library is a happy, welcoming place for the Calvert High community.

CCPS athletes earned four state championships in the fall season.

The Northern Patriots volleyball team defeated Damascus High to win the 3A title—the 10th in the team's history—in a hard-fought match at the University of Maryland, College Park.

In the state cross country meet, two Calvert athletes raced to victory through the hills of the Hereford High campus in Baltimore County. Hayley Jackson of Patuxent High won her second consecutive Class 2A title, and Northern's Matt Bennett won the 3A championship.

The Patuxent Panthers brought home the school’s first state football championship. After overcoming a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit, the Panthers beat Walkersville High 21-20 in the Maryland 2A championship, played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Congratulations to the athletes, coaches, and schools, plus the communities that support them!

Five CCPS schools recently participated the Green Apple Day of Service, a global event that promotes environmentally-based service projects in and around schools. Students and volunteers from Calvert Country, Dowell Elementary, Plum Point Elementary, Calvert High, and Windy Hill Middle stenciled the storm drains in their parking lots with the message “Don’t Dump. Chesapeake Bay Drainage.” The initiative aims to change behavior by educating the public that storm water runoff drains into the Chesapeake Bay, with an ultimate goal of reducing contaminants that pollute our waterways.

The Green Apple Day of Service was supported through a partnership with the Calvert County Citizen’s Green Team, a local group that previously coordinated the Calvert County Green Expo. This year, in lieu of the Green Expo, the Citizen’s Green Team is focusing on community- and environmentally-based service projects. The group donated the materials to paint each storm drain, and member Bob Boxwell even came out to assist with the painting at Dowell Elementary.

CHESPAX, the CCPS environmental program, also supported the event by providing the stencil template.

This project was one step in renewing each building’s Green School certification. Through this service project, schools showcase a community partnership while achieving one of the sustainable practices of Water Pollution Prevention.

The Green Apple Day of Service is sponsored by the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council.

Four students were recently recognized as the winners of the annual Poetry Out Loud contests held at their schools. These four talented students will compete at the regional competition, with the hopes of moving on to the state and national competitions.

The winners are:
Calvert High: Christen Holmes
Huntingtown High: Kat Csanadi-Schwartz
Northern High: Lauren Cunningham
Patuxent High: Christian Farley

The runners-up are:
Calvert High: Emmaline Sheahan and Michaela Pitcher
Huntingtown High: Emma Longfellow
Northern High: Molly Elkins and Jonathan Wilkerson (Honorable mention to Anita Misago)
Patuxent High: Melanie Croft

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The Maryland Arts Council also sponsors and facilitates Maryland’s program. In the past, each school system held a competition to determine the county winner, who then competed at the regional level. This year the Council directed individual schools to send first-place winners directly to the regional competition instead of holding county competitions. Our region includes Anne Arundel, Charles, Cecil, Montgomery, Prince Georges, and St. Mary’s counties and Baltimore City. The regional competition will be held February 20, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown campus.

When the Weather Outside is Frightful

Although we’ve had a mild winter so far, CCPS is ready for severe weather.

The decision to close or delay schools—or close schools early—is never easy. Several departments are involved to make the best possible decision for the safety of staff and students. Among the most challenging scenarios is a prediction that precipitation will begin between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM when buses are making their morning runs—a circumstance that seems to happen frequently in Southern Maryland. An equally complex situation occurs when conditions in one area of the county are hazardous, while another region has rain or even no precipitation. In these cases as well as all others, we err on the side of safety.

CCPS produced a video to explain the process and considerations for closing schools for inclement weather. Watch the video by clicking . Frequently asked questions about weather decisions are answered on the CCPS website on the .

Shine the Light - Mr. Kawecki

$

When Northern High Principal Kevin Howard asked social studies teacher and core lead Marshal Kawecki to attend a workshop on formative assessment last year, he agreed to go because (1) he’s a team player, and (2) he thought it might be helpful for new teachers. He returned to Northern convinced that what he learned isn’t just for new teachers; it’s for every teacher.

Mr. Kawecki is now in his second year leading a cohort of Northern High teachers through Formative Assessment for Maryland Educators (FAME), a professional development initiative facilitated by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Ten teachers and one administrator volunteered for the first cohort. This year, seven teachers are involved. There were more participants in the beginning of the school year, he said, but a staff baby boom and subsequent maternity leaves cut the numbers.

The heart of a teacher’s work is with students in the classroom. Much goes on behind the scenes, however, to support teachers in their professional growth and renew their enthusiasm for their work. Professional learning isn’t glamorous or exciting, but when done well it connects to the classroom and motivates teachers. That’s what’s happening at Northern. Cohort member Darcy Richards, who teaches math, said, "Although the title of the course is FAME, it is about much more than assessments. It is about the process of teaching, beginning with lesson planning and carrying through to the summative assessment. Participating in this course has re-energized my lesson plans, and while the goal is the same, the path by which we get there is improved so that, hopefully, students are coming away with a deeper understanding of the material."

As the facilitator of the group, Mr. Kawecki attends periodic meetings with MSDE staff and utilizes the ample resources FAME provides when meeting with his Northern colleagues. He credits MSDE and state coordinator Melissa Finkel for a supportive state network of facilitators. The participating teachers take an online class through MSDE’s Blackboard professional development site, implement the practices in their classrooms, and meet after school to discuss results and share ideas.

Why has FAME been so popular at Northern? Formative assessment—defined by MSDE as a tool used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust instruction and improve achievement—is nothing new in the world of education. What is new is the interdisciplinary collaboration among the cohort members and the resulting professional conversations. According to Mr. Kawecki, high school teachers tend to be enveloped in their departments and contents. FAME has given teachers of multiple disciplines the chance to apply consistent methodology, plus a community of colleagues with whom to discuss and learn.

Mr. Kawecki believes that the collaborative conversations at Northern are richer and more positive as a result of FAME. "FAME has the capacity to empower teachers to look at how they’re assessing kids and helping them move forward," he said. "Too often we as teachers feel like we’ve lost control of time. FAME is allowing teachers to take control of their instruction. The goal is to have kids and teachers work together to take steps to increase learning." Special education teacher Karen Fedorchak echoes his belief in the importance of assessing with a focus on students, and she does so more effectively as a result of working with the cohort. "The most important part of FAME for me," she said, "has been providing the students with feedback. FAME has taught me how essential feedback is for students to move forward in their learning." She and her FAME colleagues developed ways to utilize technology to make the feedback process both easier and more efficient and to enable communication between teacher and student.

It’s not surprising that Mr. Kawecki values the FAME community of practice. After twenty-two years of teaching—fourteen at Northern and eight at Northeast in Anne Arundel County—he most enjoys the relationships he builds with students and their excitement when they "get it," especially in the challenging AP United States History class he teaches. As the cohort facilitator, he uses the skills acquired during his years as a successful baseball coach to build efficacy among the teachers. He genuinely enjoys the work and conversations because he’s grappling with the same instructional issues in his own classroom.

What’s next for FAME at Northern? Mr. Kawecki believes that after three years, formative assessment will be common practice in the building. The school will see real results, he thinks, once they reach the tipping point of over 50% of the teachers participating in the process. What happens next will really be up to the teachers, though, because much of the value of FAME lies in the common thread of ownership of teaching and learning. As Principal Howard said, "As we continue to increase the skills of our teachers, we will continue to impact the learning of our students."
