Shine the Light - Donna Miller

Transverse. Longitudinal. Amplitude. Slinky.

Donna Miller’s eighth grade classroom at Windy Hill Middle School is infused with sophisticated science vocabulary and a sprinkling of kid-friendly terms. The result? A rigorous, engaging lesson that builds true understanding of the concept through application and a little fun.

As the 2016 Calvert County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, Ms. Miller knows a thing or two about excellence in the classroom. In her 28th year of teaching, Ms. Miller is held in high regard by her colleagues at the state and local level. According to her principal James Kurtz, Ms. Miller’s students like and respect her as well, and that’s far more important to her than the many professional accolades she has received during her career. Ms. Miller cares deeply about educating the “whole child” and fostering an ongoing desire for learning so that her students leave her classroom as responsible, self-disciplined, and independent learners.

What does her philosophy look like in practice? Slinkys stretched across the hallway outside of her classroom held by smiling students conducting experiments about waves. Ms. Miller is energized at the prospect of redesigning her instruction to meet the rigor of the Next Generation Science Standards, and she uses familiar situations and materials to teach complex concepts. Notable in her classroom is the value she places on student voices. She encourages students to write down what their classmates say during class discussions, thereby showing them that what they know is important.

Mr. Kurtz believes that one of Ms. Miller’s talents is her keen ability to advance her students’ capacity to communicate abstract concepts in writing. “I have seen writing samples from her classes,” he said, “including from students with disabilities, which clearly show how much influence she has on her students’ writing skills.”

This year, Mrs. Miller was chosen from a pool of hundreds of teachers across the nation to be a Northrup Grumman Teacher Fellow. This prestigious distinction involves collaborating with teachers nationwide to identify and develop authentic engineering design practices for implementation in the classroom. Through this fellowship, she was able to work with Northrop Grumman engineers to design and implement specific STEM content linked to real-world problems.

As county Teacher of the Year, Ms. Miller is most looking forward to doing even more collaborating with her counterparts from across Maryland. Ms. Miller is not only an exemplary educator; she is a model of leadership among her colleagues.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) honored seventeen educators from Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties with Outstanding Teacher awards for their leadership in the fields of mathematics and science.

This year, nine math teachers and eight science teachers from schools in the three counties received awards. The teachers were chosen for their outstanding performance in the areas of creativity, rapport with students, enthusiasm for teaching, professionalism, and innovative teaching methods. Each teacher received a plaque and a cash award at a dinner held in their honor. Over the past 25 years, SMECO has recognized more than 330 local math and science teachers.

Austin J. Slater, Jr., SMECO president and CEO, spoke highly of the award winners. He said, “Our gifted honorees understand that their job is about more than teaching mathematics and science. It’s about teaching things like character, imagination, and resilience. They display a commitment to classroom excellence and are helping to ensure that Southern Maryland schools prepare the next generation of leaders and innovators.” He added, “Good teachers do more than fill smart boards with numbers and diagrams. They fill young minds with virtues and values. They teach our kids how to cooperate and overcome obstacles. They teach skills that are important not only to employers and the economy, but also important to our future.”

The Calvert County SMECO Outstanding Mathematics Teachers of the Year are:

  • Michelle Bell, Patuxent High School;
  • Wenique Brooks, St. Leonard Elementary School; and
  • Jennifer Murphy, Mill Creek Middle School.

The Calvert County SMECO Outstanding Science Teachers of the Year are:

  • Lorraine Dunigan, Patuxent High School;
  • Deborah Heyes, Huntingtown High School; and
  • Kelli Short, Barstow Elementary School.

SMECO sponsors several events for students to encourage them to excel in math, science, and technology. These events include the local MATHCOUNTS competition, the annual Southern Maryland Regional Computer Bowl, and the Elementary Math Challenge. So far this year, more than 1,000 students in SMECO’s service area have participated in these events.

CCPS Saves Energy

The 2015-2016 school year marked another increase in energy savings in Calvert County Public Schools. We reduced electric consumption by 17.83% compared to our baseline year of 2007-2008.

Much of the savings is a result of the Energy Savings and Incentive Program. Inspired by the EmPOWER MD act passed in 2008, Calvert County Public Schools set an annual target to reduce energy consumption by 15%. This year, thanks to the efforts of our schools, we exceeded that goal by nearly 3%.

“The program is,” said Sheila Stevens, Energy and Environmental Specialist, “a great opportunity for our students to learn about the responsible use of resources and an incentive for our schools to conserve energy.”

The most energy efficient schools were:

1st Place (tie):Plum Point Middle and the Career and Technology Academy
3rd Place: Mutual Elementary
4th Place: Windy Hill Middle
5th Place: Calvert Country School

Patuxent High showed the highest one-year improvement, with a reduction of 15.97%.

The top-performing schools received a cash award that is funded through our rebate program with the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE).

Congratulations to Dr. Melaney Sanchez

Congratulations to Dr. Melaney Sanchez, Sunderland Elementary fifth grade teacher, who was honored by the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union’s “Reminisce*Recognize*Reward Sweepstakes.” This reward program recognizes extraordinary people in the education community who share a remarkable commitment to make a difference every day.

In her nomination letter, Sunderland parent Laura Brague wrote, “Dr. Melaney Sanchez is one of those people in life that you aspire to be, a person of character, integrity, compassion, and grace. As my son's 5th grade teacher, she has impacted him in so many positive ways. As a parent, I will be forever grateful for a son who has gone from hating to pick up a book to one who is now eagerly willing to sit down and read whatever we throw his way. She believes in each and every one of her students and makes it her personal goal to find out what each one needs individually in order to be a successful learner. Her students are respectful in and out of the classroom because of the positivity that she exudes to them on a daily basis. She goes above and beyond the call of duty responding to emails, taking late night phone calls for reassurance, and being an advocate for every student that is lucky enough to have known her. What an inspiration!”

Initially selected as a weekly winner, Dr. Sanchez was honored in June 2016 as a grand prize winner. Dr. Sanchez received a Visa gift card, and Sunderland Elementary School was awarded a $1000 cash prize.
